I think I've always had a desire to be a film maker...
I grew up in a small town within a lifestyle on the countryside. Despite my love for the animals and everything I had, I also had a strong passion for drawing, photography, character, film and story.
I had a burning desire to make a meaningful life with my craft.
I wanted to pursue this dream.
I had to pursue this dream.
Upon graduating in 2014, I found Vancouver Film School and decided that I wanted to learn more about the art form I had the least knowledge in
Animation
I would take two years of this education at VFS
Foundations of Art and Design
3D Animation and VFX
Film proved to be a combination of everything my heart craved, all wrapped up into one medium
in October 2014, I moved to the city of Vancouver

FIRST YEAR AT VFS
The first year of VFS, I took Foundations of Art and Design which gave me a taste of film making and the film industry as a whole. We did everything from acting, to sound, animation to color theory. We learnt composition, theory and technical skills in both live action and animated film making.
This was a wonderful year for me to adjust to the city and learn the basics. I always had a knack for making my own little films, but during this year I really began to understand the language of the art form. But I have a strong passion for all the fields involving film making as a whole. So I have always had the strong desire to make complete short films. |
INTRO TO SUCCESSFUL SHORT FILM
One of my favorite pieces I created in the year was a term 2 writing assignment. The goal was to tell a story using a sequence of still frames played in succession. Any medium, any style.
I decided to draw all of the frames. Bewilder came to be from a lot of hard work. But the film gave an emotional response from both my teachers, and my classmates. Here I had a revelation. I enjoyed telling stories. This was the goal. tell a story that makes the audience feel When the audience feels, they remember I realized I like to make these stories beautiful to watch, as well as symbolic. For me it is so much more exciting to make a story that can have multiple themes, meanings or responses. Although, I, as the creator have a goal and meaning behind the film, the audience can improvise their own theories. Bewilder sparked a desire for my inner film maker |
A BEAUTIFUL DISASTER
My final Foundations film turned out to be something I wasn’t so proud of.
Going in, I knew little to nothing about 3D animation. The result was a soupy film with a bleak storyline, poor 2D integration and soupy animation.
However this was a beautiful learning experience
During production I hit a major wall. I wasn’t enjoying working on it, because I wasn’t proud of it and the story was meaningless.
It was cute
I didn’t come all this way to create something cute.
This did however give me a fire in my gut to make my second year film, a story to be remembered.
