CHARACTER FIRST
The first step was to look for rigs as if I had a character to base a story off of, that would be easier.
Finding decent, appealing free rigs is hard. I had seen the Kayla rig by Josh Sobel in action a couple times and I liked her appeal. I thought it would be fun to make an animation with a little girl/boy. I knew this near the end of Foundations. I always liked the rig. Upon looking I found a couple others. |
I have a stronger passion for animating quadrupeds/animals. And I knew that would be a good skill to showcase on my demo reel for future employees as well. I wanted to try again.
There are little to none decent animal rigs.
Then I found a horse

Then I found a horse
Now I am known as the crazy horse person
I am known to include horses in every project I do. Which is true, and I want to broaden my skillset...
Horses are hard to animate
but I understand horses
More than anything
And this rig was free.
This rig was really accurate.
I liked this rig a lot.
Using the horse seemed like a valid idea.

PITCHES
End of term 2 we needed to come up with 3 ideas to pitch to a panel of teachers.
Immediately I launched head first into story development

Using the characters I found, and a compilation of research/experiences/character development I came up with 3 pitches.
We also had to present a passport of our work up until this point
The teachers would analyze our skills, the extent of the project, goals and give us advice on which to aim for

THE IDEAS
PASSPORT OF WORK
None of the stories were solidified. They all had large plot holes. Overall, the presentation could have gone better.
My teachers recommended I go with the story Orb.
Orb was cool. I was going to use the Panther rig. Roy would carry a bulb upon a string in a world full of lamp posts. He would have to make it to the empty post in time. But a panther would set him back in his journey. The whole film would be a metaphor for how our constellations and stars work.

I liked this story. But my heart was with From Here To.
Of course my favorite story would be the one including the little girl and the horse.
They said the film would be a lot of work. It was more of a group project than a solo one. But I wanted to do it.
And so I did.
This was when I decided to begin pre production on From Here To
THE MOOD
The first step was to find a grasp on what I wanted the film to feel like. Here I set out to make Mood boards and reels with various references that matched the look I wanted.
The Mood Reel was to find clips similar to the feel, lighting, cinematography that the film should end up like.
